Rio 2016 Olympic Games: 9 Lebanese Athletes to Watch!
09 Jul. 2016 – The Olympic Games are the biggest sports event in the world! Athletes dreams of participating in these games at least once in their lifetime. Winning a medal in the Olympic Games is the greatest achievement for an athlete.
For Lebanon, the participation is an achievement in itself! We only won four medals in Olympic History: Two silver and two bronze in only two sports: one in Weightlifting and 3 in Wrestling. Unfortunately these two sports are not so popular in Lebanon nowadays.
For the 2016 Summer Olympic Games that will be held in Rio De Janeiro, in Brazil, from the 5th of August to the 21st, nine athletes may represent Lebanon at these Games. We should still wait for the confirmation of all the wild cards by the International Federations, but for now these 9 athletes are representing 7 different sports:
In Athletics, Chirine NJEIM who made the qualification in the Marathon will try to beat her National record and will mark history after competing in three Winter Olympic Games! Ahmad HAZER is the best Lebanese athletes in the men’s so far with 14.40 seconds on 110m Hurdles. He is getting his second wild card for the Olympic Games!
In Canoe, Richard MERJAN, who lives and trains in Australia, received a wild card in a sports that we don’t compete at in Lebanon: Canoe Slalom!
In Fencing, Mona SHAITO was able to qualify for the second time to the Olympic Games! She represented Lebanon in London 2012 as well!
In Judo, the Brazilian/Lebanese Nacif ELIAS will have the ultimate opportunity to compete for Lebanon in Judo in his home country Brazil! The Asian Champion will also be the only Judoka to qualify for the Olympics.
In Table Tennis, Marianna SAHAKYAN will be the only representative of her sport. She secured a place for Rio 2016 after winning the West Asian Championship!
In Shooting, Ray BASSIL will represent Lebanon for the second time at the Olympic Games in Shooting, in the Trap competition! The most decorated shooter in Lebanon showed how strong and well prepared she is this year so she was granted a wild card for Rio!
In Swimming, Gabriella DOUEIHI will be the youngest athlete to compete in Rio De Janeiro. She is only 17 and will compete in the 400m Freestyle. Anthony Barbar will also represent Lebanon in the 100m Butterfly!
