Magical Game for Manchester United Fans in Lebanon
06 Mar. 2017- The last couple of months have been delightful for Manchester United fans in Lebanon as they got to see legends they grew up watching behind the screen playing on home soil. It all started out back in September when they witnessed eleven-time Premiere League Champion Paul Scholes playing in Lebanon with the likes of Roberto Carlos, Michel Salgado, Luis Figo, Jens Lehmann, David Trezeguet, Carles Puyol and Marco Materazzi. Manchester United fans got to see another club icon last Saturday, Ryan Giggs. Manchester United’s most decorated player played alongside fellow one-club man and AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini. The two football icons were joined by top futsal players and faced Bank of Beirut in a futsal game where they came out victorious. We sat with Manchester United Supporters’ Club Lebanon representative, Zeinab Fawaz, and asked her about what it felt like to see Manchester United legends like Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs here in Lebanon and what it meant to the fan base and the supporters’ club as well. Below is what she had to say.
“It’s always great for fans in Lebanon to get to watch players of Paul Scholes’s or Ryan Giggs’s caliber. Not everyone was lucky enough to see these greats at Old Trafford so this presented a unique opportunity. As Manchester United fans, having our club legends here was an exceptional experience. You could see how happy we were with autographs and photos of our idols. We just hope they left Lebanon with positive memories and hope to welcome them again in the near future. As a fan club, we also welcome exceptional players from other teams.. the likes of Maldini and Ronaldinho deserve respect. It is an honor to have such talent in Lebanon and these events put our country on the map. Hopefully, events like these also serve to revive the interest of football and sports in our youth and maybe even our government. We are more than capable of hosting and participating in big football/sports tournaments and this might just be the door to that.”
It’s looking good for Manchester United fans here in Lebanon and with a Clasico coming up next month, can they hope for more club legends such as David Beckham and Ruud Van Nistelrooy?
